It looks as though I may have had a 'senior moment'.
I have measured everything and compared the brakes on both sides and the cylinders are OK.
It seems the problem is that the snail cams on the nearside were worn to the extent that the there was a significant notch at the limit of previous use when trying to adjust beyond this point it felt like the end of the travel of the adjuster.
Having re-dressed the snail cams with a file they feel much better and I do have sufficient adjustment available.
Thanks for the response and suggestion.

I have heard of this problem before, but no explanation of the cause, so it could be badly sized slave cylinders. Odd that the rear should be similarly affected though as it is a completely different design from the front.

The solution I have heard of is to fit (weld) 1/8" thick spacers under the snail cam frames, which gives you back the adjustment range.

I have had my ZB for just over a year and decided that it was about time to inspect the state of the brakes although they have always worked fine.
Removed both front drums and everything looked OK, about 5mm lining on the shoes and even wear.
When refitting the drums I found that the offside adjusters locked up the shoes on the second or third click as expected, however the nearside adjusters went right round only just causing the shoes to touch the drums on maximum.
Clearly I had an over sized drum however when I swapped the drums over the brake adjusters acted just the same!!
I then did the same on the rear brakes with exactly the same result!
This must be more than a coincidence?

Looking through the history file that came with the car I noticed that the previous owner had purchased a complete set of brake shoes and new nearside wheel cylinders just before putting the car back on the road in March 2010.

The car is back on the road now and the brakes are fine but I now know I have limited nearside adjustment available.

Were there any new wheel cylinders being sold in 2010 that were sub standard in some way?

Can anybody solve this one for me??
